For the really large stuff...yeah, chances are you'll need a truck (or at least a big SUV).

But for the smaller stuff, a truck is not really needed.

Kinja'd!!!

Subaru Forester towing a boat.

Kinja'd!!!

Buick LeSabre towing an old GTO.

Kinja'd!!!

Euro Honda Civic towing a slightly larger boat than the Forester.

Kinja'd!!!

E60 M5 towing a Carrera RS. (because V10)

Kinja'd!!!

Dodge Viper towing an open wheel race car. (Also because V10)

Kinja'd!!!

MINI Cooper S towing a small catamaran sailboat.

All those things are relatively light. Also there's a difference between being able to pull something and being able to control it over twisty and steep mountain roads (what can I say, I'm used to towing to rallies). I'd trust most of those going relatively short distances on relatively flat roads with lower speeds and fewer tight corners, but about half of those would terrify me if I came across them in the hilly countryside.

My Forester pulls a 5x8 trailer of building material. With both pieces so small, I can go through the drivethru if I choose.

OMG THATS A VIPER TOWING A F1 CAR. My balls would literally explode if I saw that IRL.

Also inb4 truck engine joke.

To be fair, the viper has a truck engine.

Yeah, all of those have very light tongue weights, and also either light enough in gross mass to not need brakes, or have braked axles on the trailer (or should have, at any rate) with the center of mass far enough rearward to reduce the tongue weight to less than 600lbs.

You aren't going to pull 6000 pounds (roughly 2000lb steel flatbed trailer + an Audi S4 + tools and spare parts stored in the Audi) with an M5. Not because there is lack of power, but because placing 600 pounds on the car past the rear axle will upset the balance, and likely overload the suspension. (And once you start adding more stuff into the rear of the vehicle, that is more and more likely)

And even at those weights, you may find that an even heavier duty truck will make your job driving the combination much easier. Which is why I'm currently looking for a 3/4 ton diesel pickup.
